There’s something about Northern Ontario that just stays with you.
It’s the long stretch of highway where the trees seem to go on forever. The quiet moments by the lake where time slows down. The small towns where a good cup of coffee somehow feels like part of the journey itself.
This isn’t just a road trip—it’s a reminder of how good it feels to get out there.
So whether you’re planning your next big RV adventure or just looking for inspiration for a weekend escape, consider this your friendly Christie’s RV guide to Northern Ontario. Take the full route, pick your favourite stops, or simply let one place spark your next getaway.
A Quick Northern Ontario Travel Check-List

A little preparation goes a long way out north.
From experience, here’s what makes the biggest difference on this route:
- Fuel up whenever you can—distances between towns can be long
- Keep snacks, water, and a backup plan in your RV (just in case)
- Book campsites early in summer—this route is no secret anymore
- Expect limited cell service in stretches (and honestly… that’s part of the charm)
The best trips are the ones where you’re prepared enough to relax.
The Classic Route: Lake Superior Circle Tour

If you’ve never done this drive before, this is the one that earns its reputation.
This stretch follows the shoreline of Lake Superior where you can expect massive water views, rocky cliffs, quiet beaches, and some of the most unforgettable sunsets you’ll ever see from a campsite.
🌅 Sault Ste. Marie to Batchawana Bay
Since you’re likely already starting right here in Sault Ste. Marie, this is your chance to ease into the journey without any rush at all.
Top up your coffee, double-check your gear, and roll out along the shoreline toward Batchawana Bay. It’s a short but meaningful first stretch, where the city fades behind you and Lake Superior starts to take over the view.
Batchawana Bay makes the perfect first overnight stop: calm water, soft sand, and that simple feeling of settling into the trip and thinking, “yeah… this is exactly what we needed.”
🌲 Lake Superior Provincial Park
This is where things start to feel wild in the best way.
Think:
- turquoise coves at Agawa Bay
- cliffside views along Highway 17
- peaceful forested campsites that feel tucked away from everything
This is RV travel at its most grounding.
🪵 Wawa to Thunder Bay
You’ll know you’re here when you see the Wawa Goose, and from there, the landscape just keeps opening up.
Must-stops along the way:
- Pukaskwa National Park for rugged shoreline hiking
- Aguasabon Falls (worth pulling over every time)
- Sleeping Giant Provincial Park near Thunder Bay for unforgettable views
🌄 Hidden Gems Worth Slowing Down For

Not every stop on this trip is on a postcard, and that’s what makes it special.
If you’ve got extra time (or just want to wander a bit), these detours are worth it:
🛶 Manitoulin Island
From the cascading waters of Bridal Veil Falls to scenic hiking trails, sandy beaches, and stunning shoreline views, Manitoulin Island is the kind of place that invites you to stay awhile.
⛏️ Temiskaming & Northern Communities
Small towns like Cobalt and Haileybury tell stories of mining history, resilience, and northern life. It’s slower travel here—and that’s the point.
🌲 Timmins & Cochrane Region
A great stop for families, especially if wildlife viewing or unique attractions like the Polar Bear Habitat are on your list.
🧭 A Simple 7-Day Inspiration Route

If you’re planning it out, here’s a relaxed version of the journey:
Day 1: Sault Ste. Marie → Batchawana Bay
Day 2: Lake Superior Provincial Park
Day 3: Wawa → Marathon area
Day 4: Pukaskwa National Park → Terrace Bay
Day 5: Thunder Bay exploration
